On three afternoons during the World Retreat, you can choose between five different exciting and entertaining workshops. The workshops come in three different versions: talks, games and body practices. While most of the talks focus on scientific, cultural or psychological aspects of meditation, two of them are concerned with the history and art of the country we are in: Spain. The games encourage a playful attitude towards the exploration of the self, while the body practices use breath and movements as channels of self-expression.

The course venue was Cuatre Camins, a prison outside Barcelona, with prisoners convicted of drug crimes, violence and murder. Those who go through a rehabilitation programme may be rewarded with leaves and possibly even earlier release. The programme includes learning Acem Meditation and practising the techinque for at least two months, after which continued meditation practice is optional.

“When I was looking for a meditation technique, I looked for a method I could use to improve myself. I was particularly interested in the psychological aspects. Acem Meditation looked promising. Since I like to prepare and know what things are about, I read the information about scientific aspects of the technique on the website. Rather than just following the road already defined, I prefer an open-ended process."

Another kind of dialogue

He was only a teenager the first time he saw the watercolors of Swedish painter Lars Lerin. He felt like he'd had a revelation. The paintings spoke to him in a way he hadn't been spoken to before. Then he learned Acem Meditation. Meditating with closed eyes twice a day also opened new vistas and a different kind of dialogue.
